Viva Las Vegas

The next destination on our trip was Las Vegas, where we would be saying good bye to our car and continue the rest of the trip using planes and trains.

We had another longish drive to Vegas from the Grand Canyon so again we woke up early to get going.
Just before you get to Vegas you pass by the Hoover Dam. When we asked a petrol station employee whether it was worth a stop, she answered with a resounding yes, so thats what we did. It was worth a stop! The dam wall is impressive with a pretty sheer drop, which if I'm honest I struggled standing close to. I had to cross to the other side of the wall where the drop wasn't as high.

Anyway we had decided that since we had the car for whole day we should make good use of it, so we stopped off at the outlet shop and the Vegas sign before dropping it off, as both are a little way off the strip. After shopping til we dropped and queueing with all the other tourists for our picture we went to drop off the car and get our first view of the strip. Even though we were travelling through during the day, the lights and craziness were still very cool and definitely quite a contrast to the Grand Canyon.

What we hadn't realised until we went to book our hotel, was that we would be in Vegas during a time called March Madness. This is basically a combination of spring break and college basketball play offs and all the college kids descend on Vegas. It made for a rowdy atmosphere, and despite paying a bit more for our room it was cool to be there during all the craziness. Most people checking in had massive cooler boxes with them to put in their rooms and all the sports betting places were packed with people placing bets.

Anyway we checked into our hotel, the MGM Grand, and then made our way out onto the strip.
We gambled a bit, drank quite a few alcoholic slushies, bought a tacky Vegas glass for the slushies, checked out the Bellagio fountains and generally just wandered in and out of various hotels. Each hotel has a different theme, so it's really fun checking them all out.
